Newham Generals
With the new single ‘Head Get Mangled’ out now on iTunes, we caught up with D Double E and Footsie, otherwise known as the ‘Newham Generals’ to talk about the history of NG and what people can expect from their album out later this year.
So, for people that haven’t heard of you guys before, tell us a quick summary of how you both met up and where you come from?
F (Footsie) - Well we’re both from Forest Gate in Newham, the borough… we live 10 minutes from each other so we’ve known each other off the block for years. We used to bump into each other at all the local raves.
D (D Double E) – Before we got into any crews, I was called MC D
F – Our love for music was what kept us bumping into each other.
How would you describe your sound?
D – Exciting!!!
F – In Double’s words very original! (Laughs)
The new stuff we’ve heard from you has a completely unique vibe. Who’s on production duty when it comes to your music?
F – Things like ‘Head Get Mangled’, that’s the big dog Cage… who’s masterminded a lot of Dizzee’s music and he’s the biggest producer in the UK so it’s all Cage & myself on “Generally Speaking”, we done it all.
Who inspires you to make your music?
D – Music inspired me to make music!
F – Ha ha yeah that’s definitely it! (laughs)
How do you think the label Dirty Stank as a platform has helped you with getting your music out there?
F - Come on man, you got a number 1 selling artist floating about so boy so performance to 2,000 people day in day out as given us the platform that you cant get anywhere else… you cant buy these windows of opportunity that we’re getting so it’s a lot.
Tell us a bit about the first single and the video, it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Did you always aim for something so leftfield?
D – Yeah man, we aimed for something different because we are different and it came out in the video
F – and after having a nice time over the last few years it made sense to come with something more left field, doing the usual wouldn’t have grabbed people’s attention. Then after all that time it was the tune that came up as you can hear its unique track so it needed unique visuals, there was exclusive directors pulled in to do a big job, that’s the way the label wanted to go with it also to launch the album. It was just a well put together package.
What was it like working with Adam Deacon and how did you hook up the cameo with him in the video?
D – Adams been about man, we linked him up at the Dizzee number 1 party and he wanted to work with us…
F - …yeah and he’s fan, straight up… he really wanted to get involved.
So, the album ‘Generally Speaking’, when’s it out and what can we expect? Any features on there?
D – Album is out April 6th, you can expect to hear Dizzee on there, Chrome, G Man from Slew Dem and Slash E…
F - … yeah Slash is another exclusive Dirtee Stank member!
How can people find more about your music?
F – Wow, YouTube… there’s plenty of shit. Just Google it… there’s a bag of stuff on there; you’ll be clicking it for hours!
D – You know the MySpace, blogging crew, facebook crew, blog, twitter, we’re there still (laughs)
Any shout outs?
F – Big up Dirtee Stank! |
