Shimmer
Love it or hate it, Shimmer has a point to make and she’s making it in style. Her new single ‘Baby’ was produced by Renz, known for his former work with Major Ace and work on the Guyver soundtrack with Corey Johnson. From the tracks deep bassline to its raunchy video, featuring her backing dancers Whipped Pink, Shimmer has a no-holds-barred approach to her music. We caught up with Shimmer to find out more about her and what she has planned for 2009.
So Shimmer, first of all thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to do this interview. For people that haven’t heard your music, tell us a bit about your style and how long you’ve been in the game for?
Ah, I make freak-hop! Style wise I would say the music is tongue in cheek, slash bossy. The game? I guess since my mummy popped, but I only started officially two years ago… so I really am a Shimmer Baby!
You made your first track at the age of 8 so have you ever delved into production yourself with any recent material?
Oh my, I haaave you know! Can you hear it? Hell no! It was an embarrassing attempt on Garage band. I think it’s a default Apple programme. It was more to speed up the process of some form of demo, as I had not one clue who to go to for assistance at the time. Its mad because I’ve been watching Ayo, my executive producer closely and its really inspired me to give it a try however, I think I’ll stick to what I know for now, for everyone’s safety!
Tell us about your current label situation, are you pushing your music independently?
Well, I just signed under new management early this year, so it’s all hands on deck. The album will be finished this year and we have already had increasing interest with regards to publishing deals and more….lets wait and see! ‘Baby’ is the next single you’re releasing, tell us when it comes out and where people can cop it? Were realising it like…now! Well, on the 20th of April. It’s going to be available on digital download via Itunes.
The video for it is raunchy to say the least! What kind of feedback have you had from it?
Oooh! Unmentionable. (laughs). It’s getting a great response with youtube views currently through the roof. The video is currently on various music channels and will be airing on MTV in two weeks. Pats on backs all round. I may have to auction off some of the baseball costumes one day….I wonder how the item description would read…..
So you’re working on an album coming out later this year, tell us how far you’ve got with it and when we can an expect a release date?
We're storming ahead at the moment. I’m in a good place so it’s just flowing. I’ve nothing but Shimmerin’ words for my producer, so it’s all really exciting! I put a lot of pressure on myself previously to come up with the greatest bars, the greatest this, the greatest that and now, I’m just letting the music do the talking. If you don’t like it…kiss my wow! Ok? (winks)
Can we expect another video from you before the years up?
Capital Yes! Were shooting next month, just so we can deliver more dolly delight to your door! It’s a very different sound from “Baby” and will most certainly be featuring Whipped Pink. So, when Shimmer isn’t in the booth or filming raunchy music videos, what does she do in her spare time??
Are you trying to get me a tap on the wrists? (Smiles)
How can people reading this interview hear your music?
Well being the kind woman I am, I’ve left some footprints below and as previously mentioned there will be the Itunes download. The album is due out later this year, so HMV and all good record shops it is!
Any shout outs?
Always! Shouts to you guys at HHB for having me! Thanks to my manager, Victor, my PR Simone, Whipped Pink and Coco for all the hard work on the choreography. (Takes breath)
